Some folks seem to be worshipping at the Church of Serious lately. You know what I mean, you read their prayers and lamentations: “THIS is the WORST thing ever!” “How can you show this video? He had a slightly rounded back and he deadlifted that bar! He is going to SNAP his back!” “OMG! That poster is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life!”
And, my personal favorite: “YOU ARE RUINING CROSSFIT!”
Please. If I had a dollar for every time something was supposedly “ruining CrossFit”, I’d take us all to Denmark and party like we just did on the CrossFit Tour. And then we’d go to the CrossFit Games and Montana and Argentina. Oh wait, we really are going there this year …
Anyhow, back to my ranting. Or ranting about ranting. (If there’s a rip in the time-space continuum, I am not responsible. Nor am I cleaning it up. I’m only a mom to two people, not the universe.) My point is this: whining means you have it good. Really. If you have time to whine, it means you’re not worrying about your safety, or your next meal. This is a good thing, an accomplishment in itself. First-world lamentation.
Now, there’s a difference between whining and a valid complaint. I get that. Some things we really should get outraged about; that’s our duty as a society. We have common concerns and actions that we deem not acceptable in our society: child molestation, killing, assault, etc. Some of us also have what I call Shit We Won’t Allow (SWWA). My SWWA list includes racism, sexism, and gay bashing, among other things. Yours may vary, because you might be an asshole. I don’t know.
Anyhow, there are valid complaints but there’s also over-reacting because you’ve kind of lost perspective. It happens to all of us. We get wrapped up in something and then later realize it’s just a waste of time. Kind of silly, really. See, anything that’s not moving you forward as a human being is holding you back. So maybe you should change what you can, speak when you have to, and toss to the side that which does not deserve your attention. And when that doesn’t work? There’s always the barbell. It doesn’t care how much you complain, just whether you can lift it …
